Aenet nodded and tried to focus. "We had moved to Dublin after our parents died. Aithne took their deaths incredibly hard...at least I thought it was their deaths she was concerned about. She always seemed jumpy, installing dead bolt locks on all of her doors and security bars on all of her windows. Aithne was always using her gift to help people, always letting her empathy get away from her. I thought that's all it was, her power getting the best of her."

She smiled softly, "But things seemed to calm down after she met this nice young man. They got married and got their own house...there were no bars or dead bolts. No more crosses all over the place like some kind of church. They even had a son, a beautiful little boy they named Michael. Their pictures are in the locket she always wears but..."

"A drunk driver killed them. Michael had gotten sick and Aithne had to work, so her husband took the little boy to the hospital. It happened while they were driving home. She seemed to fall into that paranoid state again, but it got worse. That's when she began learning martial arts and practicing with those dreadful guns she carries. Aithne was always showing up with a cut on her forehead or a bruise on her arm like she was always getting into fights. But...she was always so empathic, so strong in her abilities that I figured that just like last time, she was feeling the emotion remnants of her family and what had happened to them. Finally, one day, she announced she was going to leave the country, she thought that maybe Dublin had too many memories for her."

Aenet frowned, "She seemed to have just disappeared once day. Everything was still at her house except her guns, her clothes, and her savings. Three or fours year ago, she turned up here. I get a letter from this little town saying that she's doing great and even has a new bakery."

"This man..." she trailed off, thens hook her head. "He must have been what she was always running from, not her empathic powers or her post cognitive powers. She was running from him..."

I see... we both seem to have the idea that whoever has her is the same person she'd spent all this time avoiding. The way he acted around the crosses leads me to believe that he'd been around since maybe even before Dublin. Like maybe he's the source of the paranoia to begin with. It's always hard when people keep things to themselves. Hmm... what about your parents? Did they ever seem to act jumpy?

Aenet seemed to take a second to register the question. She thought about it for a second, then frowned. "My mother...always seemed a little over protective of Aithne. She was jumpy herself before my little sister was born. She was always looking over her shoulder at night when my father would be away on business, always double checking the locks. She never said anything and my father never noticed because she was fine as long as he was home or nearby."

*Supra thought about this for a moment. Both Aithne and her mother were paranoid, but both also calmed down when there was a man present. It possible that the attacker is after the emphatic powers, in which case the target would have to remain living. Also, the powers would have to be hereditary and only manifest in females. Either that, or the attacker is somehow deterred by the presence of a man, or perhaps love. No, if that were the case, Aenet would be targeted as well. Then again, it's possible that the attacker is unaware of the power manifesting in Aenet. Aithne's powers were used liberally, so it was probably no secret that she had them. Perhaps the same could be said of her mother.*

*Even if Supra had established a possible motive, he was still no closer to discovering his identity or location. The worst part was that even though everyone has now seen him and heard him, the only one who knew who he was is Aithne. Perhaps rather than establish who he is, it might be better to find out what he is. Supra knew he wasn't human, but there were a number or creatures that Supra knew of capable of surviving bullet wounds and pulling iron bars out of the wall.*

Do you suppose he could be a vampire? It seems to me like the paranoia points toward that. Her paranoia only kicked in at night right? Vampires would seem to be deterred by a symbol of faith or perhaps family love. Maybe a good next step would be to ask around the local vampire hangouts and see if anyone fits the description of someone craving emphatic powers. It's a start at least.

In the meantime, why don't you try and get in contact with her contacts in Dublin. Maybe you can find out more about the events that took place before she came here.

The woman pulled herself to her feet and nodded. "I'll make a few phone calls and see what I turn up. There's an eight hour time difference between here and there, though, so it may take some time before I can get some definite answers.

"As far as your vampire theory goes," she continued, "the Lavare family has had a long history tied to strange, supernatural creatures, but vampires more than anything else. It would only make sense that this creature be a vampire but...why would he be after Aithne? What could a man like that want from her?"

William walked in, pushing the door open. Military flak-jacket abandoned for a stiff-looking cloak. Beneath the cloak was his usual host of weapons, two sidearms, shotgun on the small of the back, and an M16 diagonally slung across his back.

The bakery was always a place of relaxation for him, and without a home for the moment, he looked forward to a moment of sol--

People all around, one of them practically thrummed with energy. William didn't understand what he was dealing with, but he knew if it had any sort of power, it was probably through the roof.

He scanned the area, and heard the butt end of a sentence. "...be a vampire but...why would he be after Aithne? What could a man like that want from her?"

"Simple," William said, "it's a Vampire. Screw rhyme or reason, vamps do what they want. It's not like there are laws stopping them around here."

The girl wasn't Aithne... William grew more cautious. A hand floated near his sidearm. "What's going on?"

Aenet looked up at William and frowned. "Aithne's been...kidnapped, I suppose is the correct way to put it. And I don't think that this particular vampire is doing it just to be an ass. He had a reason for wanting Aithne..."
